Bratin believes in the goodness, purity and power of the Creator, the One who manages and conducts all the forces of the universe, quite as much as he believes in his art. Most gods within the Hindu pantheon, such as Shiva, are warriors. But Krishna’s strength remains mitigated by friendly benevolence. As against the other gods whose wrath evokes fear, Krishna emits wisdom, reasoning, and positive thinking, bereft of aggression. In Kaliyo Daman for instance, Krishna is shown dancing on the many headed reptile. This great serpent, Naga Kaliyo, is said to have poisoned the waters of the Yamuna rendering it undrinkable. Its multi-headed form reminds the artist of the innumerable evils (vishas or poisons) the serpent represents. Instead of showing him overpowering the snake with physical force, Krishna is shown dancing on the head of the reptile, cowherd’s staff in hand. Artist Biodata

Born in 1969, Bratin obtained a BFA degree from Visva Bharati Shantiniketan in 1993. He won the Annual Merit Award given by Visva Bharati in 1991, 92, 93 and the award for Best Painting given by the Indian Society of Oriental Art and Culture in 1992. There have been several shows of Bratin’s paintings, at Habiart Foundation, New Delhi in 2004, Arushi Arts, New Delhi in 2003, Rightlines Art Gallery, Bangalore in 2002 and 1999 Classic Source, Mumbai in 2001 and Grindlays Bank Art Gallery , Kolkata in 1993. He has had a couple of two-person shows in Kolkata and been part of innumerable group shows, including Indian Art Summit, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi in 2008; Art Fair organised by Genesis Gallery at Cathedral Church, Kolkata in 2006; Annual show, “Devotion”, at Gallery Art Positive New Delhi in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007; Nehru Centre London, organized by Art Pilgrim, Gurgaon in 2004; International Business Summit, Davos, Switzerland organized by Habiart Foundation, New Delhi in 2004; ‘Durga’ at La Mere Gallery, Kolkata in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, “Kite” at Dhoomimal Art Centre, New Delhi in 2002; Annual show of the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007; Taj Mahal Hotel, Prince of Wales Museum, and Nehru Centre Mumbai, organized by Concern India Foundation in 2001; Rossi & Rossi Gallery, London in 2001; Paintings sold at Cristie’s auction for Concern India Foundation in 2001, 2002 and 2005; Rightlines Art Gallery, Bangalore in 1998; ‘Spring Showers’ at Gallery Katayun, Kolkata in 1996 and, since 1990, in more than sixty shows with Chitrakoot Art Gallery Katayun, Kolkata in 1996 and, since 1990, in more than sixty shows with Chitrakoot Art Gallery; Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Kolkata; Habitat Centre; Lalit Kala Academy; AIFACS; Sridharan Art Gallery; Joie Art Positive; Dhoomimal Art Centre in New Delhi; Art & Soul Galleria; Jahangir Art Gallery; Gallery Soul Flower in Mumbai and Singapore; Art Folio in Chandigarh; Gallery One; Art Pilgrim in Gurgaon; Renaissance Art Gallery; Crimson Art Gallery in Bangalore and Art World in Chenna.
